Today, I am blessed to have here with me Bitten Johnson. It has been 27 years since Bitten started her journey into food addiction, which she now calls “Sugar Addiction.”
Over the years Bitten has had the good fortune to collaborate with many professionals and treat thousands of people worldwide. Through these collaborations, Bitten have developed a deep understanding of the brain disease addiction and she has developed a unique treatment method called Holistic Addiction Medicine. All addiction begins in the brain, regardless of the drug, so Bitten works with ASAM’s definition of Addiction Interaction Disorder which aims to correct the dysfunctions of the brain’s circuitry. The word addiction comes from the Latin word “addicere” which means being a slave to something. Addictions are powerful and lead to hundreds of deaths every day.
Bitten is a registered nurse, addiction specialist and ADDIS®/SUGAR® authorized (addiction screening, assessment and diagnostic tools) and currently offer courses and training for professionals. Today there are many very skilled counselors all over the world to whom Bitten refers any clients that contact her. Bitten’s mission is to bring knowledge and experience to others so that more people are able to diagnose and treat this fatal disease, addiction, in order to free people from this painful illness and to decrease shame and stigma.

[00:45] How Bitten Became An Expert on Sugar Addiction
Growing up, Bitten was obsessed with sugar cubes, chocolate, and ice cream.
In nursing school, Bitten learned that you suppress your appetite if you smoke. So that's why she started smoking.
Then, Bitten became an alcoholic.
Addiction is about the brain and how your brain reacts to substances.
At age 33, Bitten fell in love with addiction medicine.
Bitten knew that she was using ice cream and chocolate the same way she would use alcohol.
[13:00] Addiction Is All About What Is Happening In Your Brain
You can be addicted to something with just small amounts.
Addiction is all about what is going on in your brain.
You don’t have to eat a lot or drink a lot to be an addict.
As time goes on, you will increase how much you are drinking or eating.
Each drug that comes into your life, you become addicted to faster and faster.
[15:10] How To Identify Whether or Not Your Addiction Is Real
There’s a difference between harmful use and addiction. You need to figure out which one you have because there will be different treatments.
Harmful users are emotional eaters. They eat when they are sad, happy, stressed, etc. There are all kinds of reasons why people will overeat.
Ask a harmful user, “why?” There will be an answer. You can’t ask “why” to addict because it's a primary illness; it doesn't have a cause.
Instead, you need to ask addicts how you can help them.
Some problems that addiction will cause: Eating alone
Poor economy
Poor health
Poor relationships
Mood swings
Loss of energy

· Conventional medicine in America is often called "health care," but it's "sick care" because it only focuses on treating symptoms and doesn't teach people how to be healthy.
· Wake Up and Aikido camp teaches people how to be healthy and is an example of health care.
· Eating clean and caring for your body is important for optimal health and can lead to a smaller, less leaky gut with fewer toxins seeping through.
· It's okay to occasionally eat less healthy foods if your gut is healthy and able to handle it.
· The goal is progress, not perfection, and developing metabolic flexibility is important for long-term health.
[17:15] What to Look For When Buying Red Meat
· Labels on meat products can be misleading and is often a selling tactic.
· Consumers should be aware of the terms used, such as "natural," "no hormones," "no antibiotics," "grass-fed," "vegetarian fed," etc.
· Most cows are fed inflammatory foods like grains, which can lead to health problems for the cows and the consumers who eat their meat.
· Some cows are even fed candy bars to fatten them up for more profit.
· High-quality meat is important for better nutrition and anti-inflammatory properties.
· Grass-fed and finished is the best option, as it means the cow has eaten grass from start to finish of its life.
[22:05] The Worst Artificial Sweeteners vs The Best Sugar Replacements
Some inflammatory artificial sweeteners are sucralose and brown rice syrup. At the same time, some recommended sugar replacements are Coconut Sugar (less refined, lower glycemic index), Pure Maple Syrup, Non-GMO Monkfruit, Dates (and date syrup), and Raw Honey.
· Brown rice syrup may be perceived as healthy but is often found in products with other inflammatory ingredients.
· The recommended sugar replacements are less refined and often have better nutritional value than artificial sweeteners.
· Stevia is disliked due to the harsh chemicals used to extract it, which can cause gut disruption for some people.
· Monk fruit is a better alternative, as it has a zero glycemic index and does not cause the same issues as stevia.
· Many people have noticed positive digestion and overall health changes after eliminating stevia from their diets.

· Oats can be considered in the gray area of healthy foods due to their pros and cons.
· Most oats are sprayed with glyphosate, a pesticide that promotes inflammation and can harm health.
· Oats are high in phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that prevents the body from absorbing necessary nutrients.
· Too much phytic acid can lead to gut issues, inflammation, arthritis, and brain fog.
· Organic and sprouted oats are better options for consuming oats.
[47:55] The Top 5 Most Commonly Asked Questions About Food Labels
· Consume high-quality protein from grass-fed beef, mackerel, and fish instead of relying on protein bars.
Read the labels on coffee creamers carefully and choose cleaner options like Three Trees almond milk, which contains only water and almonds, cashews, or walnuts.
Eating real, whole foods to improve health and well-being. Notice how certain foods make you feel and adjust your diet accordingly.
Liposomal vitamin C is better absorbed into the body and can be more effective than traditional vitamin C supplements.
Many people avoid bread while dieting, but it's not necessary. However, keep in mind to avoid grains and pseudo-grains.
